4 IN A ROW

What is Four in a Row?

Four in a Row — also known as Connect Four — is a two-player strategy classic played on a standing grid of seven columns and six rows. Players take turns dropping coloured discs into the columns; each disc falls to the lowest empty slot. The goal is simple: be the first to line up four of your own discs in a straight line.

With TapTogon Four in a Row you can play instantly in your browser — free, with no download and no sign-up. Take on the computer at eight strength levels, from a gentle beginner up to a near-perfect master, or pass the phone and play a friend. It is easy to learn in seconds, yet full of traps, threats and clever setups once you dig in.

How to Play

The rules take about a minute to learn:

  1. Take turns dropping discs. On your turn, tap any column that still has room. Your disc slides down and lands on top of the discs already there.
  2. Connect four to win. The first player to get four of their own discs in a straight, unbroken line wins the game.
  3. Lines count in every direction. A winning four can run horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
  4. Block your opponent. If they already have three in a row with an open end, you must drop a disc there to stop them — or lose next turn.
  5. Full board with no line is a draw. If all 42 slots fill up and nobody has four in a row, the game ends in a tie.

Tips & Strategy

Four in a Row looks casual, but a little strategy turns most games your way:

  1. Take the centre column. The middle column is part of the most possible winning lines, so controlling it gives you the widest range of threats. Playing there first is the strongest opening.
  2. Create two threats at once. The core winning idea is the double threat — a move that makes two separate three-in-a-rows. Your opponent can only block one, so the other wins.
  3. Always scan for the opponent's three. Before every move, check whether your opponent has three in a line with an open slot. If so, block it immediately.
  4. Think about who fills the square. Because discs stack, the row above a slot is only reachable after that slot is filled. Avoid playing a move that hands your opponent a winning square right on top of it.
  5. Build low, threaten high. Strong setups often stack threats vertically so that a forced block underneath sets up your win above it.
  6. Don't rush. Vertical four-in-a-rows are the easiest to spot and block. The sneaky wins are usually diagonal — look for them in your own position too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TapTogon Four in a Row free to play?

Yes, completely free. There's no download, no installation and no sign-up — it runs right in your browser on phones, tablets and desktop computers.

Is Four in a Row the same as Connect Four?

Yes. Four in a Row is the classic game also widely known as Connect Four. Two players take turns dropping discs into a seven-column, six-row grid, and the first to line up four of their own discs — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — wins.

How do you win?

Be the first to connect four of your own discs in a straight line, in any direction. Discs always fall to the lowest empty slot in the column you tap, so you're really choosing a column, not an exact square.

Can I play against a friend?

Yes. Choose 2 Players mode to play with a friend on the same device, taking turns. You can also play solo against the computer across eight difficulty levels.

Does the first player always win?

Four in a Row is a "solved" game: with perfect play the first player can force a win by starting in the centre column. In everyday play that rarely matters — the lower and middle difficulty levels stay fun and balanced. Turn the computer up to the highest levels if you want the toughest possible challenge.

Can I change the disc colours?

Yes. Open the menu and pick a colour theme: the classic red and yellow, or one of the TapTogon palettes — blue and white, or violet and white.
