What is Reversi?

Reversi is a classic two-player strategy board game played on an 8×8 grid with double-sided discs — one side dark, one side light. It first appeared in England in the 1880s and has been a favourite ever since for its "a minute to learn, a lifetime to master" appeal.

Each turn you place one disc to trap a straight line of your opponent's discs between the disc you just played and another of your own. Every trapped disc flips to your colour. When neither player can move, whoever has more discs on the board wins.

With TapTogon Reversi you can play instantly in your browser — free, with no download and no sign-up. Take on the computer at three strength levels, or pass the phone and play a friend.

How to Play

The board starts with four discs in the centre — two dark, two light — placed diagonally. Dark always moves first.

Trap a line of your opponent's discs
between two of yours — and flip them all.

  1. Make a legal move. You may only play where your new disc traps at least one straight line — horizontal, vertical or diagonal — of the opponent's discs between it and another of your own discs.
  2. Flip the captured discs. Every opponent disc on every trapped line flips to your colour at once.
  3. Pass if you must. If you have no legal move, your turn is skipped and the opponent plays again. The game continues until neither side can move.
  4. Fill the board — or block it. The game ends when the board is full or no moves remain for either player.
  5. Most discs wins. Count the discs: the colour with more on the board takes the game. Equal counts are a draw.

Tips & Strategy

Reversi rewards patience over greed. Flipping the most discs early often backfires — these habits will help you win more games.

  1. Grab the corners. A disc in a corner can never be flipped, and it anchors whole edges. Corners are the single most valuable squares on the board.
  2. Avoid the squares next to empty corners. Playing the diagonal "X-squares" or edge "C-squares" beside an empty corner often hands that corner to your opponent.
  3. Fewer discs can be better. Having fewer discs in the middlegame usually means more options and forces your opponent into bad moves. Count late, not early.
  4. Play for mobility. Keep your own legal moves plentiful while shrinking your opponent's. A player with no good move must give something up.
  5. Control the edges carefully. Stable edge discs are strong, but a half-finished edge can be flipped — build edges toward corners you already hold.
  6. Think one move ahead. Before you flip a big line, ask what square it opens for your opponent. The best move is rarely the one that flips the most discs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TapTogon Reversi free to play?

Yes. The game is completely free, with no download, no installation and no sign-up. It runs directly in your browser on phones, tablets and desktop computers.

Do I need to create an account?

No account is required. You can open the page and start playing immediately against the computer or a friend on the same device.

What is the goal of Reversi?

The goal is to finish with more discs of your colour on the board than your opponent. You capture discs by trapping a straight line of the opponent's discs between two of your own, which flips them to your colour.

What is the difference between Reversi and Othello?

They are essentially the same game. Reversi is the older, public-domain name from the 1880s; Othello is a later trademarked version with a fixed starting position. TapTogon uses the standard Reversi rules with the classic central starting discs.

Can I play against a friend?

Yes. Choose 2 Players mode to play with a friend on the same device, taking turns tapping the board. You can also play solo against the computer on Easy, Medium or Hard.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. The game is optimised for touch screens and adapts to any screen size, so it plays smoothly on mobile, tablet and desktop with no app to install.
